Using A House for Hermit Crab in the Classroom

A House For Hermit Crab Carle, Eric/ Nobbs, Keith (NRT) 1 of 1One of my favorite books to use in        my classroom is Eric Carle's

      A House for Hermit Crab.

As we all know hermit crabs live in a shell and as the crab grows he has to "shed" his shell and find a larger shell in which to live. This story not only tells a story about hermit crab finding a new shell, but it also tells about all of the interesting sea animals he meets along the way. Not only does he meet the animals, but he also adds them to his decor and takes them along with him.  He is not only decorating his new home, he is also making friends with other lonely and different sea animals.

I use this book to introduce self to self-text-world writing in my class.  Most all of students immediately identify with moving as most all of them have moved several times in their young lives.  But, I have also had kids identify with being taken from their homes and put in foster care which is heartbreaking. With all of the war and disasters that the kids hear about on the news, a lot of world connections are made.  We have very rich discussions about all of the connections we make about losing our homes, etc.  But, a lot of the students identify with other things like decorating their rooms, meeting new friends, being different and not have friends.  This is just a great book to help children think about their lives and the lives of others.
