Teaching Children About Diversity

These are three of the books I use when we learn about being different and living with diversity.  Children do not always understand that even though another person may look much different from them physically, they are very much alike in their hopes and dreams.  I love the book about eating lunch because I love to cook and I have always cooked a very diversified menu for my family. I truly enjoy bring this love of food and cooking to my children. I will admit sometimes it takes a little coaxing to get them to try some foods.  My students love the pictures in my second book above.  They look at the children and the main difference they see is the clothes.  We talk about the fact that all we have to do is put jeans and a t-shirt on these children and they look just like us!  This book is also very informative about customs and traditions.  The children love learning about other cultures and we compare and contrast them with out own;  we always find similarities as well as differences.  My classes always love my 3rd book above and by the end of the unit, everyone is trying to be the different one in class, because being different makes you unique and that makes you special!!  This is also a great subject to team with your librarian for resources and lesson plans.  I went to the librarian at my school and discussed what I wanted to do with this unit and she helped me by writing lesson plans to be included in my unit about Hispanics.  She also contacted residents in the community to come in and talk to  my students, gathered books for us, found videos, etc.  It was great and it was so nice to have a partner to discuss the  unit with and get input from.  After I had read things over and over, fresh eyes going over it offered lots of inspiration and ideas!  (Just a note:  Our school librarian's mother is an excellent cook and she made many dishes for the students to sample that went along with the Hispanic part of the unit!)
